Signs You May Have Gum Disease

Gum disease (Periodontitis) is a serious infection that damages the gums, can deteriorate the jawbone and cause tooth loss. It is generally caused by poor oral hygiene. If left untreated, it can cause serious problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and lung disease.

Risk factors of gum disease

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, if you have periodontitis you have an increased risk of coronary artery disease. Additionally, people with diabetes, especially uncontrolled diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease. People with diabetes may also find it hard to control their blood sugar levels.

Signs you may have gum disease:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing, flossing or eating
  • Constant bad breath
  • Mouth sores
  • Receding gums
  • Teeth pulling away
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • A change in your bite
